Peugeot is currently under investigation for potentially lying about their diesel emissions. If wrongdoing is admitted, Peugeot owners could be owed thousands in compensation. Find out today if you can join the claim.

French car manufacturer, Peugeot, could be the latest company to find itself embroiled in its own dieselgate scandal. Investigations are ongoing in relation to claims Peugeot has misled its customers and regulators in relation to their diesel emissions.

The suggestion is that Peugeot have installed “defeat devices” into their vehicles which limit emissions when being tested, only to produce much more emissions in the real world. If this is proven to be true, UK Peugeot owners could claim thousands in compensation.

What is the Peugeot Emissions Scandal?

In 2016, as the world’s eyes were on diesel cars after the 2015 dieselgate scandal, Peugeot were referred to French prosecutors by the French consumer watchdog DGCCRF after seized documents indicated diesel emission irregularities in their vehicles.

The diesel emissions probe revealed in 2017 that 1.9 million of Peugeot’s vehicles could have been fitted with fraudulent defeat devices. Reports at the time suggested the Group that manufactures Peugeot, The PSA Group, faces up to €5billion in fines.

A French government-backed testing probe also found that five of the PSA Group’s vehicles emitted substantially more NOx in real-world driving compared to the laboratory. NOx contributes to various respiratory diseases, cancer, acid rain and smog. Pollution from cars is the biggest contributor to NOx in our air.

What is a defeat device?

Peugeot are accused of installing “defeat devices” into their vehicles. This is software that is specifically programmed to alter their emissions output when being tested by regulators, in order to pass regulation.

This software works by recognising the strict laboratory testing scenarios like the speed, the acceleration rate, and the temperature of the room. If the device recognises it is being tested in a lab, emission-reducing controls are turned on to allow lower results in order for the vehicle to pass the legal emissions limit.

When this device is turned off, however, cars fitted with defeat devices can emit up to 40 times the legal limit. This was shown in the first-ever dieselgate scandal of Volkswagen in 2015.

Which Peugeot models are affected?

So far, Peugeot have denied any wrongdoing, and the investigation is ongoing. However, the investigation relates to 1.9 million Euro 5 standard vehicles.  These vehicles will be diesel, and the normal range for manufacturing years in an emission claim is 2008-2018, but this may change as more information is uncovered.

The panel of solicitors at emissions.co.uk will keep Peugeot owners updated in relation to which models may be affected.

Why should I register my interest in a Peugeot dieselgate claim?

This is a question the panel of experts at emissions.co.uk often get – what is the point in claiming? Well, there are actually a number of reasons to lodge a claim:

  1. Your Health – NOx is the deadly pollutant that Peugeot lied about. Reports suggest NOx is estimated to cause 40,000 premature deaths in the UK each year
  2. Your Pocket – You may have suffered damages as a result of Peugeot’s lie. Autocar tests have shown cars after the fix have a worse fuel economy.
  3. Their Accountability – emissions.co.uk want to hold massive car manufacturers to account and tell them that they cannot lie to their customers about dangerous emissions
  4. Our Environment – NOx produces acid rain, smog and can contribute to climate change. We need as little of it in the atmosphere as possible, and certainly don’t need corporations lying about their output.
